WHY IS IT NAMED THE INSTITUTO HOLLINWORTH?

IN TRIBUTE AND ACKNOWLEDGMENT TO LETA STETTER HOLLINGWORTH

Leta Stetter Hollingworth (1886-1939).

Leta S. Hollingworth (1886-1939) She was a pioneer: she fought for years for the recognition of Clinical Psychology, she studied intelligence in women as well as the characteristics of children with C.I. greater than 180, making a great contribution in each of these areas. Her work has produced significant progress in Applied Psychology and, has led to the creation of a section dedicated to Clinical Psychology within the American Psychological Association (APA) and the need for theoretical-practical training as a minimum requirement to obtain the accreditation necessary to be considered a Clinical Psychologist.

Her 1916 doctoral thesis “Functional Periodicity” showed that women maintained their intellectual capacity throughout the month, without menstruation affecting it. She then fought the prevailing idea of female disability during those days of the month by making it easier for companies and universities to hire women.

She also studied the variability in women’s intelligence, concluding that it was the same as in the boys’ group, so that there were as many gifted girls as boys. Until then it was believed that women had intelligence that remained within an average range, while among men there was more variability, reaching higher points. Hollingworth saw the importance of heredity in intelligence, like Terman, but in addition, she also perceived the influence of the environment by raising interesting educational proposals for gifted children. She noted the emotional problems that arose in adolescence due to the integration difficulties of this population, which at times led teachers to believe that they had a lower-than-normal intelligence, when the difference was just the opposite. For all these reasons, we wanted to pay homage to this extraordinary Psychologist and Researcher by giving her surname to our Institute.

HOW DO WE DO IT?

ASSESMENT

We carry out the appropriate assessment from time to time, using classic tools, such as the clinical interview or psychometric tests, and others more advanced, such as the assessment of brain function through a computer that collects the electrical activity in the different brain areas (neurofeedback) or variables somatic symptoms such as cardiac variability, conductance or, respiration.

ASSESSMENT OF GLOBAL INTELLECTUAL CAPACITY

We use the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for adults (WAIS-IV) *, the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for children (WISC-V) or the Raven’s 2 Test.

* It is one of the tests that allows you to be admitted to the Mensa

NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF COGNITIVE SKILLS

We determine which cognitive functions to measure and use the most appropriate tools (standardized tests). Specific mental processes such as attention, orientation, memory, learning ability, language, perception, visuospatial and visual-constructive skills or executive function are evaluated.

The objective of the evaluation can be diagnostic (acquired brain damage, dementia, psychiatric pathology, ADHD, Asperger’s …) and / or therapeutic (identifies strengths and weaknesses in specific functions, thus allowing to determine the most suitable intervention process. appropriate)

TSCIENTIFICALLY RECOGNIZED ADVANCED THERAPIES

EMDR

This is a cutting-edge therapeutic approach, endorsed by numerous scientific studies, with which a wide range of problems is solved, based on experiences that are difficult to assimilate, which we call trauma.

It was developed by Francine Shapiro in the United States, in 1989, initially as a therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder. It has since proven its effectiveness in multiple ailments.

It is a profound therapy, in which the roots of the patient’s current symptoms are sought and worked on to resolve them.

BIOFEEDBACK AND NEUROFEEDBACK

Biofeedback is a training of somatic aspects, in which the person receives information in real time, on the response of his body to what he is doing.

It has been used for more than 30 years, although the high cost of the equipment did not allow it to reach the general population. Now, with a lower cost of equipment and a great deal of research behind it, it can be offered in health centers to address a variety of aspects, including stress management, emotional self-regulation, and more.

Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback in which we record the electrical activity of the brain, which results in different types of waves, and which we can train through conditioning, rewarding during an activity such as watching a movie, the right waves in each moment.

It is very effective in dealing with a variety of difficulties such as stress, ADHD, epilepsy, insomnia, fibromyalgia, etc.

It is also very useful for improving cognitive performance if you have a deterioration or if you want to boost and improve performance to achieve excellence.

NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL REHABILITATION
For people whose mental functions have been affected, we develop an intervention plan to restore or compensate for the deficits, based on the assessment, and set goals.

Damage to the brain (traumatic, vascular, infectious, viral, toxic, neurodegenerative …) can produce changes in cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and physical processes. Our goal is to improve the quality of life of the person suffering from this type of damage, optimizing their abilities, and enhancing their autonomy.

We rely on models and strategies provided by cognitive behavioral psychology and neuropsychology that have proven their usefulness in the rehabilitation of functions, such as attention, orientation, memory, learning ability, language, perception, visuospatial and visual-constructive skills, or executive functions (planning, sequencing, supervision).

TRAINING

We offer training for both the public and professionals in psychology and psychiatry. Supervision is also conducted by EMDR trained psychologists and psychiatrists.
